Tech She Can Charter reaches 128 signatories

Zoopla, the owner of multiple leading property-related website, software and data brands, and founding member of Tech She Can – a charter that seeks to tackle gender imbalance in the technology industry, has jointly announced that it has reached 128 signatories. Launched in February 2018, the tech-led initiative is driven by a group of organisations comprising businesses of all sizes from a breadth of industries, including professional services, aviation, technology, banking, media and many others.

The Tech She Can Charter is a commitment by organisations to work together to increase the number of women working in technology roles in the UK. It aims to address the root cause of the problem at a societal level by inspiring and educating young girls and women to pursue tech careers, and to share best practice across the organisations involved.

Each of the signatories agrees to work on streams of activity together, which include:

  • Supporting policy - Leading the diversity debate alongside educators and policymakers. Building relationships and raising awareness of the initiative with prospective supporters;

  • Improve education - Providing inspiring educational content for teachers, careers advisers, parents and pupils to bring the technology curriculum to life and show young people, especially girls, the possibility that a career in technology can bring;

  • An image overhaul - Profile inspiring and relatable role models to encourage children and young adults - especially girls - by showing the breadth of career opportunities available in technology.

Over the past 12 months, a schools engagement pilot called ‘Tech We Can’, has benefitted 726 10-13 year old students from nine schools across the UK. The programme provides teachers with female-friendly lesson plans, giving both the boys and girls in their classrooms an insight into what a career in technology means and why it’s a great future career option, regardless of gender or background. The lessons have been developed by a teacher who has joined The Tech She Can Charter and is an education consultant from PwC.

Sandy Lacey-Aberdein, Head of Talent Acquisition, at Zoopla, which is a founding member of the Tech She Can Charter, comments: “Industry plays a vital role in addressing the gender imbalance endemic to the tech landscape, both today and for the future talent pipeline. As a leading technology business, it is critical for Zoopla to spearhead effective initiatives that encourage women into tech-led careers, and with recent press reports indicating a decline in girls choosing to study ICT or computing at GCSE level, our responsibility is more acute than ever.

“We are delighted to have a new cohort of partners from across a range of industries on board, supporting the Tech She Can Charter. We hope that engagement continues to gather momentum over the next 12 months; together and through collaboration, we can deliver maximum impact.”
