British homeowners would most like to share a fence with Stephen Fry , according to the Zoopla.co.uk Celebrity Neighbour Survey for 2010. Babyshambles rocker, Pete Doherty was revealed as the least desirable celebrity neighbour. The survey asked over 2,000 property owners which celebrities they would most like and least like to find living next door in 2010.
Stephen Fry and Cheryl Cole confirmed their titles as 'a national treasure' and 'the nation's sweetheart' by gaining 26.1% and 14.7% of the votes for Most Desirable Celebrity Neighbours respectively. Completing the top five choices for best neighbours were Kirstie Allsopp (9.6%), Jamie Oliver (9.2%) and Jeremy Clarkson (7.6%).
Pete Doherty had some fierce competition for the top slot of Least Desirable Celebrity Neighbour from controversial singer Amy Winehouse, each getting 16.4% and 15.7% of the votes respectively and Katie Price (12.8%) was not far behind, followed by Nick Griffin (9.2%) and Gordon Brown (6.6%).
As a possible sign of things to come in May, the nation has made clear which political figure they would prefer as a neighbour in 2010 with David Cameron making the list of ten most desirable neighbours, while Gordon Brown features as one of the ten least desirable. However, BNP leader Nick Griffin outstrips all other politicians in terms of unpopularity, capturing almost 10% of the votes as the celebrity people would least like to find next door.
And, following his recent stint on Celebrity Big Brother, Vinnie Jones appears to have split the nation in terms of whether he would make a good neighbour, with 3.2% of voters saying he would not be their choice of a desirable neighbour and 3.8% voting for him as someone they would like to have living next door. Similar sentiment surrounds Gordon Ramsay who appears to be the Marmite of neighbours, with an almost equal number of people voting both for and against him as someone they would want on their street.
Alex Chesterman, Founder of Zoopla.co.uk, commented: "Celebrity neighbours can both add to and detract from property values in a neighbourhood and it is clear from the responses to our survey who would likely be welcomed and who wouldn.t. No doubt some .for sale. signs went up in a hurry last year in the leafy suburb of Hadley Wood when Amy Winehouse announced she was moving in."
Mr Chesterman added: "Our respondents made it clear that being 'noisy' and 'disruptive' top the list of things that make a bad neighbour and interestingly and in some ways contradictory, the two traits that were overwhelmingly stated as making a good neighbour were 'keeping an eye on our property' and 'minding their own business'!"
