Your guide to moving to Jersey

Why Jersey is a good place to live

A continental climate on a British Island? Just 13 miles from France, Jersey is 85 miles from England's shores.

Located in the Bay of St Malo, the largest of the Channel Islands is often warmer than the rest of the UK - and gets more sunshine hours.

Measuring 10 miles by 5 miles, Jersey has beautiful beaches and countryside galore. And it's an incredibly safe place to live, with one of the lowest crime rates in the UK.

Residents apparently often leave their cars unlocked, confident that neither the vehicle, nor its contents, will be stolen.

Plus, of course, it has some of the lowest tax rates in the whole of Europe.

What's Jersey famous for?

With a reputation as a 'millionaire's island', property prices here are famously expensive, with the average home costing several hundred thousands pounds more than in the rest of the UK.

Jersey has 20 miles of beautiful beaches on its shores and low tides twice a day, which almost double the size of the island, unveiling miles of sand and extra rock pools to explore.

Did you know the red post box originally came from here? Although in its first incantation, it was originally green!

During the Second World War, Jersey was occupied by the Germans and the prisoners of war built huge war tunnels, which can be visited by the public today.

And of course, everyone's heard of the Jersey potato. Its flavour is so distinctive, it has been put on the Protected Designation of Origin list. That means no one can use the name for another product.

Finally, Jersey enjoys some of the lowest income tax rates in Europe - 20% - no matter what you earn.

Things to do in Jersey

Steeped in history and culture, there are lots of fun things to visit in Jersey.

The war tunnels are a must, as is the Maritime Museum, and La Hougue Bie - one of the oldest buildings in the world (4,000-3,500 BC)

The 800-year-old Mont Orgueil Castle is one of the best examples of a medieval castle you'll find and has become a symbol of Jersey's national identity and independent character.

Outdoor explorers will be spoilt for choice in the Jersey National Park and there are miles of walking and bike trails, alongside some of the cleanest beaches in the UK to explore.

For shopping fans, Jersey has some beautiful boutiques and high end stores, alongside independent department stores.

Foodies will love St Helier Central Market and Jersey Public Fish Market, alongside the many farm shops on the island - and the food scene here is excellent. There are no less than 17 award-winning restaurants among the many more on the island.
