Features and description

  • Freehold
This former fisherman's cottage sits minutes from Portscatho Beach on Cornwall's Roseland Peninsula. A recent renovation has used splashes of colour and modern material finishes to enhance its 18th-century charm. Spanning over 1,000 sq ft, the house has three light-filled bedrooms and a delightful, fuss-free paved rear garden. Truro Station is around a 30-minute drive away and runs direct trains to London Paddington.

The Tour

The house is set on the slight incline of Sunnyside, a private road defined by its terrace of fisherman's cottages. Distinctive canary yellow accents on its front façade hint towards the playful use of colour within.

Entry is to a decorative porch. From here is the open-plan primary living space, well-lit by light streaming in from windows at both ends of the house. A sightline through the room fosters a sociable, flexible feel.

The sitting area is arranged at the front, centred around a wood burner. Forest green-painted alcoves sit on either side and are fitted with cupboards.

A dining room sits centrally, with an L-shaped kitchen beyond. Here, decorative yellow tiles complement the honeyed hues of an X countertop and a run of neat, white units house appliances. A window above the sink overlooks the garden, which can be accessed via a rear porch flanked by a chalkboard-painted wall. There are plenty of coat pegs here, perfect for hanging up wetsuits after a beach day. A utility room sits adjacent.

Three generously proportioned bedrooms are positioned on the first-floor level. Each is quiet and finished in a serene palette, with windows overlooking either the sea or nearby rooftops. There is a built-in wardrobe in the front room that adds to the storage space provided by cupboards across both floors. The family bathroom is positioned centrally and has a shower and a bathtub.

Outside Space

Steps lead from the kitchen up to a pretty paved rear garden, a delightful spot to sip a morning coffee or play a post-swim game of cards. Easy and low-maintenance, it has plenty of room for potted plants if desired.

A wooden gate at the rear opens directly to a country walking path.

The Area

Situated on the Roseland Peninsula, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Portscatho is a quaint fishing village with patches of sandy beaches and an old stone jetty. It is protected by a cove, making it particularly safe for swimming and it also provides shelter from the south-westerly winds.

The beautiful Porthcurnick Beach is owned by the National Trust and has acres of inviting sand. In the village, there is grocery and several good pubs including the family-owned 16th-century pub The Plume of Feathers and local favourites, The Standard and The Hidden Hut, both of which were founded by the renowned chef, Simon Stallard.

Carved into the cliffs, the famous open-air Minack Theatre is particularly stunning. Also close by is the award-winning Hidden Hut, a short walk across the cliffs and hosts ‘Feast Nights’ on a long communal table - although remember to bring plates and cutlery.

The cathedral city of Truro is approximately 34 minutes away by car. Its offerings are rich and varied, from excellent dining spots to a museum and a theatre. Falmouth is an hour's drive away, with a host of artisan food shops, an arthouse cinema, waterhouse restaurants and the National Maritime Museum.

Slightly further afield, St Ives can be reached within an hour and a half. Here, an outpost of Tate and the Anima Mundi Gallery are brilliant ways to spend an afternoon, as is the wonderfully preserved Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden. Nearby is Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens, host to a multitude of installations by international artists.

There is a primary school in the village and secondary schools in the surrounding area, including Truro Girls, a well-regarded private school in Truro. Transport connections are also within easy reach; Truro Station is around 30 minutes away by car, where trains run to London Paddington in around four and a half hours. From the city, there is quick access to the A39 and the A30.

Currently Council Tax exempt as the house is regularly rented as holiday home accomodation, details of which can be shared on request.
