Castlebay is also the main ferry terminal for the island with the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry making twice daily visits in the summer time from Oban, in the winter time the ferry runs a more restricted service. A further smaller ferry operates from Ardmhor on Barra to Eriskay and regular scheduled flights operate from Glasgow and Benbecula with the famous cockle sands being used as a runway when tides permit.
