Nestled in a quaint private close, this charming 1920s "Chocolate Box" Wells Cottage sits in the middle of its plot, surrounded by a lovely, secluded garden with a swimming pool.
Inside, there are two inviting reception rooms; The expansive yet intimate living room offers a cosy retreat, while the separate dining room, currently repurposed as a study/games room, provides versatile space for work or leisure. The kitchen-breakfast room is delightful, featuring a distinctive arched doorway that elegantly connects it to the living area.
The accommodation is generous, comprising five bedrooms and three bathrooms. For those seeking a more expansive bedroom, there is potential to merge the two smaller rooms into a larger space. The current owners have tastefully extended the property, seamlessly blending the old with the new. Special attention has been given to preserving and highlighting the cottage's charming exposed timber features, adding to its unique character and warmth.
Outside
Parking and storage needs are well catered for, with ample garaging provided by a spacious single garage alongside a large parking area at the front.
The delightful garden wraps all the way around the house with lawned area at the rear and the swimming pool with surrounding terrace to the side. The secluded garden is bordered by mature shrubs, trees and plants, making for a verdant outlook.
Situation
Located within the historic village of West Chiltington with its 11th century Church and popular primary school, the location is very desirable. The nearby villages of Storrington and Pulborough, each only roughly 3.5 miles distant, offer a great range of local shops, sports facilities, as well as a train station at Pulborough on the main Horsham line, with direct services to London. Horsham town centre, to the north, offers further high street shops, entertainment, recreational facilities and a swimming pool. And the A24 gives road commuter access north and southwards, and to Gatwick Airport.
Additional Information
Wells cottages are named after their architect, Reginald Fairfax Wells. In the 1920’s he moved to the Storrington area with a dream of creating ‘the perfect English village’. He bought 50 acres of Sussex heathland and built about 200 “Wells Cottages” across Kent and Sussex. West Chiltington, was his most ambitious project, and where he realised his vision, with around 70 houses.
To make them look like authentic 17th century houses, he used old irregular sized bricks and thatched roofs, with water from wells in the gardens. The cottages were snapped up as holiday homes by bohemian Londoners and have remained popular since, though some have tiled the roofs and remodelled and updated the interiors. The individual charm and character however, integral to all Wells cottages, still remains.
