Interesting notes on Dalton.
Then ancient town of Dalton in Furness lies in a narrow valley on that part of Furness which extends deep into Morecambe Bay. Once this was the capital town of Furness and was an important centre for administration and justice.
The 14th century pele tower, now known as Dalton Castle, stands almost hidden by surrounding buildings. It was built around 1330-1360 to provide a place of refuge for the monks of Furness Abbey against Scottish raiders and is now owned by the National Trust. Over the centuries it has served both as a prison and a court.
The magnificent sandstone St Mary’s Church is a few yards away from the castle and in the graveyard lies the famous portrait painter George Romney, who was born in the town.
Dalton also boasts South Lakes Wild Animal Park, an excellent school ( Dowdales) and the boundary of the fabulous Lake |District National Park is only a short drive away.
